BYU Independent Study

Brigham Young University Independent Study (BYU IS) offers a variety of rigorous online courses for middle and high school students to help them prepare for higher education and successful careers. Courses are taught by certified instructors who love teaching and want each student to succeed. Each course is divided into lessons with clearly defined learning objectives.

Lessons may include written content, videos, games, simulations and interactive labs, animations, helpful resources, assignments, and quizzes. Most lessons conclude with an instructor-graded or automatically graded assignment.

• Courses are available to all middle school and high school students

• High school courses taken before 9th grade do not count toward required credits for high school graduation

• BYU IS Specialty courses (those with a price of $299 or more) will take $100 from a student’s Technology Allowance

FAQ:

Q: How long does my child have to complete the course?

A: BYU coursework is available for 1 year from the enrollment date. Students must complete Part 1 of a given course during the 1st Semester before beginning Part 2. Access to Part 2 will only be given at the start of 2nd Semester.

Q: How long does it take to complete a course?

A: Courses typically take 40-90 hours of online work. 0.5 credit high school courses are comparable to a traditional semester-based high school class that typically requires around 60 hours of study time to complete.

Q: Are there specific requirements for diploma-seeking students?

A: Diploma-seeking students in grades 9-12 must finish coursework and the final exam by the end of each semester.

Q: How do AP Exams work?

A: Students who enroll in an AP class will need to register for the exam here, as BYU Independent Study does not facilitate AP tests. All final exams require a proctor. Search for a testing center here. Many testing sites are free.

Q: Will my child receive college credit for AP courses?

A: AP courses do not guarantee college credit, as that depends on test scores and the individual college to which a student applies. Transferability of credits into other colleges is solely up to the receiving institution.

Q: What if my BYU IS course requires books and supplies?

A: Students purchase these items independently and may seek reimbursement with Technology Allowance.
